Poem #3

From the beginning of time I watched as you were shaped.
I moved to and fro giving you space to thrive and transition.
Beside you, above you, in between your layers and all around,
I am that which shapes your surface and who you are.

When God sent forth intentions, I moved, and you became.

Poem #2

I remember running late to the airport
I remember the anxiety of being left behind
I remember the heartbreak of leaving my homeland
I remember the warm streams of tears pouring down my face at the gate
I remember falling asleep in sorrow burrowed between an empty row of seats
I remember waking up with swollen eyes filled with more tears
I remember the fear of the unknown ahead of me
I remember being alone during the layover
I remember being perplexed by my surroundings
I remember the strange smells
I remember that feeling of change, of forward and upward movement, transforming from fear to fascination

Poem #1

Striding through the citronella grass and up the dew covered hills where the dawn has brought new air to inhale. Through the trodden path all strewn with pebbles, ancient roots and small shrubs reach to say hello.

Land sprouted from earth,
layered with granite and strength,
bold, everlasting.

Descending down the sturdy mountains the waters have nestled between the hills. The Kingdom Plantae finds its home between the splendor of the heavens, the coves of the mountainside and border the ponds

Water from the sky
becomes the love of the earth
nourishing all life.

Mother Africa

Everything I know about Mother Africa I learned in a book.
And with everything I know about her,
I know nothing about Mother Africa.

Congruent

The universe and I are congruent.
We are the perfect equation of infinity.

Expansive in our thoughts,
We can create with endless possibilities.

We are creation, a state of being, matter in all forms.

The universe and I are congruent.
Me inside of it and the universe inside of me.

Celestial bodies.

The vows

I do,
I pledge to honor and obey the desires of my heart.
At the commencement of this commitment
I assumed that was you.

Your presence gave me pleasure
And to make you smile was my pleasure.

So, I took your hand and placed a treasure on your finger,
Promising to forever treasure you no matter the weather.
Whether it rain or shine,
Whether it hail or the typhoons emerge on our shores,
Whether blistery winds knock down our door,
Whether floods overflow in our house.

I do,
I promise to be faithful and true.
True to my waking passions,
True to the emotions in my gut,
True to every thought in my mind

And so sorry, that is no longer you.

I am what I am

I am what I am,
Or, I am that I am.

They don't want me to put my fist in the air.
They say if I wear my hair standing on end with a tight curl I can't work here.

They don't want to see the inked artistic expressions on my body.
They don't want to see my inked artistic expressions from my body.

They don't want to read the truth of my ink.
They don't want to hear what I think.

Well, that's too bad for mister Jim.
And that's to bad for the rest like him.

I am who I am,
Or, I am that I am.

I am the curriculum developer that educates your children.
I am the developer that masters the music that you copy.
I am the cultural icon who fashions the clothes that you copy.
I am the genetically thick hipped, full lipped, muscle ripped species that you pay to copy.

I am who I am,
Or, I am that I am.
